Viruses & Bacteria
Lupus is an autoimmune disorder meaning that the immune system becomes hyperactive and attacks normal tissue. Exposure to viruses and bacteria usually prompt the immune system to attack just the invading cells. However, since lupus causes an overreaction in patients, the immune system can turn and attack normal cells along with the invading cells causing a flare.
It is important that lupus patients take care when they are around sick people. They are more prone to a flare if they do get sick, and that flare can cause aches, pains, fevers, blood problems, hypertension, renal problems, and more. Lupus patients usually have a greater reaction to illnesses that can be rather debilitating.
If a patient feels they have been exposed to viruses or bacteria they should see their physician regarding medication. Some over-the-counter medications can have bad interactions with regular lupus medications. Also, doctors may need to prescribe medications strong enough to deal with the hyperactive immune system. Rest is also important to lupus patients in a flare due to virus or bacteria.
